If you have Microsoft Vista operating system on your home computer, you have free website blocking software already. It is fairly easy to use also. Simply click on the Start button. Then open the control panel by double clicking on the icon. Select set up parental controls. Next select the account you want to monitor. Next click on the button to turn on parental controls. You can use the built-in-filter on Vista to block specific websites, but the hard part is you have to input each website that you want blocked. Vista's free website blocking software may not be the best program to use if you have a child that uses the Internet to do research for homework. There are so many different sites that you would have to input that it would be impractical to use for this purpose. Vista does not have a method to track incoming and outgoing emails. It does not monitor instant messages or track websites that have been visited. It does allow you to set a time limit on a child's access to the Internet. You can block out times that they are not allowed online. They will get a warning 15 minutes before their time ends and another one a minute before it ends. Whatever they were working on or looking at will be saved so they can come back to it later.

You can safely use free website blocking software for a young child. Vista's website blocker may be a very helpful program to use. The reason is, you can simply use the part that allows you to input only preapproved sites. You input the website addresses that are allowed and everything else is blocked. Again, this will work for a younger child, but it's usefulness is a bit limited. Vista's blocking software will allow you to limit access to the games your children are allowed to play. With younger children this is fine.

When you are using Windows Vista on your home computer, and you have children, especially teenage children, you are not going to be able to reliable completely on free website blocking software. You will need to purchase some monitoring software to help you keep your kids safe. Sentry Parental Control Software is a good system that will allow you to select the level of restriction you use for each of your children. You can vary the level of control based on the child's age. While these are not free website blocking software programs, most are well within the range of affordability for most families.

With the rate of crime, especially sexual assault on children climbing everyday, it is absolutely essential to have a solid program for protecting your children while they are online. The Internet is a fabulous tool to use for the right purposes, but it is abused on an ever increasing basis. Be alert to how your kids are using it and who is using it to get in contact with them.
