How to Use Parental Controls on the Computer


If you have a computer that is attached to the Internet in your home and you have children, you need to learn how to use parental controls on the computer immediately. You can click on your control panel icon and it will take you to a group of icons. Find the Internet options icon and click on it. When you get the screen up find the word content. Click on content. A list of topics will come up. You should click through each topic listed that you want to restrict access to. With the topic checked, you can slide at the bottom to get a specific level of restriction for that particular topic. When you reach that level, click OK. Go to the next topic and repeat the same steps. You will see several categories of topics from nudity, language, violence, etc... After you have set the levels on all the topics you need to set a password so that you are the only one that can change the settings. Be careful that your kids don't try to figure a way around the blocks or change them. For the most part this will be difficult to do, but keep tabs on the settings. If you use something other than Microsoft's operating system, you should be able to look up the content controls settings and set parental controls on the computer in much the same way.

You will be able to use parental controls on the computer to review the latest websites that have been visited from your home computer also. Be aware of social network websites that appear. Involvement with social networks online has been a popular development recently with teenagers. Sometimes they can get ideas about drugs, alcohol and other things from these sites that you need to know about. Unfortunately, safeguarding your children from the dangers of the Internet can be a full time job. If you feel that you need help in protecting your children from others as well as from themselves, there are software programs available that will put parental controls on the computer for you. Many are able to monitor in real-time and contact you anytime a possible problem comes up, even if you are not at home.

Some of the better programs alert you to when you child is having an inappropriate instant messaging conversation online. You can log into the computer and stop the activity yourself. You can see exactly what is being said and who is sending the messages. If necessary, some programs allow you to remotely shut your child's computer completely down.
